Workplace Flexibility

To help DHS employees balance the demands of their increasingly complex modern lives, some components and offices within the Department allow Alternative Work Schedules (AWS) and teleworking.

Alternative Work Schedules (AWS) are work schedules that differ from traditional fixed work schedules (e.g., 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week). AWS enables eligible employees to have work schedules that help the employee balance work and family responsibilities.

There are two categories of AWS:

  1. Flexible work schedules (FWS)
  2. Compressed work schedules (CWS)

Click on the links above for more information on CWS or FWS.  For general guidance, procedures, assigns authorities, and responsibilities for the establishment of Alternative Work Schedules at DHS, contact your human resources office or e-mail worklife@hq.dhs.gov.

Telework policy at DHS varies by component and office. Employees of offices that allow teleworking may be permitted to telework as many as several days per week to as little as one day per month, or on an as-needed basis for reasons such as special projects, illness, or the unavailability of your regular office.

For more information about teleworking as a Federal employee, visit telework.gov.

Personal Safety and Security While on Telework, Remote Work, or Alternate Work Site Flyer: This flyer provides safety best practices that Federal Government employees are encouraged to follow while on telework, remote work or working from an alternate work site as well as how to report crimes against federal employees.

E-mail worklife@hq.dhs.gov to talk with a Work/Life coordinator at DHS.
